Ubisoft is bringing Prince of Persia to Xbox Live Arcade this summer - it's being developed by mobile game specialists Gameloft (Desperate Housewives, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon among others).
In true Xbox Live style Prince of Persia Classic, originally released in 1989, will get a new coat of paint to make it palatable for a modern audience. According to Ubisoft the game will get new “character designs, animations, visuals and lighting effects giving the game a close to 3D look.” The original's gameplay will not go unscathed, either. Ubisoft adds, “To freshen the gameplay experience, new traps, puzzles and enemies have also been added.”
The news has no doubt caused Michael Bay to turn his head. He's been up to his knees in gaming recently, between his upcoming Prince of Persia film and news of his company, Digital Domain's move into game production..
Cast your eyes over the video and screens below for a taste of what to expect from Prince of Persia Classic.
This is more like it. No emo-Prince. And it looks faithful to the original stages too. My only concern is whether they end up bodging the gameplay due to the jump to 3D graphics.

im very excited about this. pop was some of the best and most fluid 2d gaming and it looks like the jump to 3d graphics will definitely enhance this game...and hopefully add a few more gameplay elements.
i wish somebody would do this with flashback (the pinnacle of 2d side scrolling gaming).

Kewl, but - the 3D makes it feel a bit claustrophobic-ish.
I was hoping that this would happen with the original Zelda once. Then it happened to Mario instead, but it was still amazing. I think they should do it to every "classic" game and put them all up on XBLA and Virtual Console.
