The next game in LucasArts'
Star Wars: Battlefront series will be a PSP exclusive titled
Renegade Squadron.
The new game will up the multiplayer ante for the series, boasting 16-player online play or 8 player ad-hoc wireless mode.
Normally SPOnG wouldn't give a damn what the plot was for a combat game, but this is
Star Wars (baby!) and embeds the player right in the original trilogy. We'll let LucasArts explain:
“Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron is the previously untold story of a ragtag ensemble of battle-hardened rogues and scoundrels assembled by Han Solo. Gathered to execute some of the most secretive operations in the Rebel Alliance's war against the Galactic Empire, the Renegade Squadron participates in battles spanning the galaxy. From the Valley of the Sith on Korriban to a dogfight in space through the remains of Alderaan, Solo directs the team on missions of sabotage, rescue and retrieval.”
Play takes place in the time between the evacuation of Yavin 4 (or the end of
A New Hope for those of us who've only seen the trilogy five times or so) and ending with the Battle of Endor (
Return of the Jedi, the bit with lasers and ewoks).
LucasArts also tells us that there's a hefty customisation option that replaces the class system of old and allows millions of possible combatants that will all perform slightly differently. Neat, eh?
Star Wars Battlefront II came out on the PS2, PC, GBA and Xbox, so there might be a few miffed
Star Wars fans out there. If you fall into that bracket let us know in the Forum (or buy a PSP).
Renegade Squadron is due this Autumn in the US, but there's no word on a UK release date as yet.
Keep an eye on SPOnG's dedicated
Renegade Squadron page for the latest news and assets.
