EA’s Redwood Shores studio has just announced a new Simpsons game due on PS3, PS2, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii and Nintendo DS in autumn.
The game is said to be an ‘action comedy’ parodying other popular games such as Grand Theft Auto and genres such as MMOs and WWII wargames.
The game – as with the TV show – is set to cleverly satirise contemporary pop and videogame culture. Mock game posters were used at the launch event announcement for the game such as Bartman Begins, Medal of Homer, NeverQuest and Grand Theft Scratchy: Blood Island.
Each level of the 16-level game is being treated like a stand-alone TV episode of the show, each with its own unique title animation, setting and story. Each one will be written by the show's writers, who must be getting tired of writing for TV now, what with 400 Simpson’s episodes already in the bag! More importantly, all the characters in the game will be voiced by their respective actors from the TV show.
In each level you get to control a pair from the hapless family – choosing from Homer, Marge, Bart or Lisa. Also, in a typically post-modern twist, the family realise that they are in a video game and use that to justify giving themselves special powers, so Bart can transform himself into Bartman and Homer into Homerball, and so on.
"Our goal in developing The Simpsons Game is to create the most original game ever, which is a lofty goal and only possible given the close collaboration with The Simpsons' creative team," said Scot Amos, executive producer.
"We're also especially proud of the game's warm visual feel, which captures - for the first time ever in a game - the look of the TV show. As Comic Book Guy says, 'Best. Simpsons Game. Ever!'"
