EA will officially announce a new game for the Wii and DS dubbed
EA Playground later this week. Imagine
Wii Sports set in the hellish days of your childhood and you're getting close to the game's core concept.
Speaking in an interview
† the game's executive producer, Dave McCarthy, gave a fuller explanation:
“EA Playground is all about capturing the sheer fun of being a kid. We've designed a dream playground full of interesting characters, cool collectables, and most importantly, a mix of easy to pick up and incredibly fun playground games. There are some classic favorites in there along with some new twists. It's all packaged together in a meaningful single player "campaign" to play your way through the schoolyard. In addition, there's also an approachable and fun multiplayer party experience that will appeal to all ages.”
If McCarthy's experience of “the sheer fun of being a kid” is the same as SPOnG's we'll be staying well clear. Sometimes words
do hurt... Since it sounds like a collection of sporty mini games and EA has a
lot of experience with sports, however, we'll give it the benefit of the doubt for now.
Speaking about the game's control system on each platform, McCarthy said:
“On Wii, there's a mix of games that cover frantic actions mapped to gestures (e.g. throwing and dodging in Dodge Ball) and others that take advantage of navigating the entire world (e.g. RC Car Racing). While set in a similar universe, there are game types exclusive to the NDS version that use stylus mechanics (e.g. Bug Hunt) and even microphone input (e.g. Spit Balls).”
It all sounds like good fun, but SPOnG can't help but feel we'd like to see EA producing something other than yet another set of mini-games for the Wii. Witn
SSX Blur it proved itself more than capable of producing an innovative Wii title that doesn't fall back to party gaming, after all.
EA Playground is being developed by EA Canada and is set for an Autumn release. SPOnG will let you know of any new details when it's officially announced.
