Beautiful Katamari Damacy: Full Details

New funny ball rubbish collector thingy goes online

What could be better than the original Katamari Damacy? We pose the question in all seriousness, as it remains as one of our favourite and most original games of the last five years. If you need to be reminded why, then you can see SPOnG's review from way back in 2004 right here.

Here’s what could be better – bigger stages, online play and the same visual style as the original, but in eye-poppingly splendid high definition. This, dear readers, is what Namco Bandai is promising us with the just-announced Beautiful Katamari Damacy.

And what a promise...

Certain elements of the ‘hardcore’ will no doubt be moaning on about the game being ‘old’ and that it will never re-capture the freshness and innovation of the original. Well, excuse us, but quality will out – and SPOnG wants Namco Bandai to make the best Katamari game yet.

Just because the original designer Keita Takahashi has washed his hands of his baby and gone off to make children’s playgrounds or something, doesn’t mean that the game cannot recapture the sheer joy of the original.

Japanese games journal, Famitsu, confirms that both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are being developed, both to include online play

Jun Moriwaki, the game’s director, told Famitsu that the game was around half-finished. No confirmation to date on a Wii version, with Moriwaki noting that he is interested in trying out other formats and interfaces such as the PC keyboard, DS stylus and Wii Remote, but that the “Wii controller is very special, so how to clear that is a big problem."

SPOnG has contacted Namco Bandai in the UK this morning for a full update on the European PAL version of Beautiful Katamari Damacy. Stay tuned for an update real soon.
