The long-awaited sequel to wargaming classic
Operation Flashpoint is finally on the way, set for a 2008 release on PC and ‘major console formats’ Codemasters proudly informed us earlier this week.
So, what's in store with
Operation Flashpoint 2? Only “warfare on a scale never seen in a FPS”, according to Codemasters. Crikey!
You will remember that the original
Operation Flashpoint won widespread international critical acclaim. Not to mention selling bunkerloads of discs in boxes.
It’s sequel, we were informed, has already been in pre-production on a closed set basis for two years and is Codemasters Studios’ most extensive R&D project to date. Basically, Codemasters is pretty much betting the farm on this title, so its safe to say that it’s probably not going to be a six out of ten. Or a seven.
Tech-wise, the game is build using a new FPS variant of the studio’s proprietary middleware Neon technology, which we were told is set to provide “the most realistic modelling of conflict scenarios in a new contemporary theatre of war… offering a multitude of military disciplines, gameplay will deliver warfare more realistic and intense then ever before, while an extensive multiplayer component will create battles on an incredible scale.”
Basically if you like wargames, you will most probably be playing this extensively at some point later in 2008. Here’s a first lonely screen to whet your appetite for destruction.
