Halo developer, Bungie has finally revealed the long-enigmatic function of the [X] button in
Halo 3 along with a few other tidbits relating to
last week's ViDoc..
The information comes from Bungie's weekly update, courtesy of content manager Frank O’Connor. The [X] button is used for deploying equipment such as the bubble shield and trip mines. In a fit of creativity Bungie has dubbed the gear deployed by the button as 'Equipment'. Talking about the gear on offer, O'Conner also hints, “There might have been another, but you can wait a month to see that one.”
The developer also addresses fears, which were raised by the footage, that the bubble shield will unbalance gameplay. O'Conner tells us, “A piece of equipment will be a rare and valuable find,” so you won't be able to hole up inside an impenetrable igloo village, picking off your foes at will.
Also mentioned were the game's graphics as seen in the footage. Addressing concerns that the game doesn't look up to scratch, O'Conner says, “All three levels... have undergone significant improvements since that footage was taken, months ago, including lighting, decorators, textures, and my favourite – water effects.”
You'll be able to judge all of the above for yourself next month when the
Halo 3 beta launches on May 16th. In the meantime, you can find more on
Halo 3 on SPOnG's
dedicated game page.
