‘All-New’ Lord of the Rings - MMO, FPS, RPG or RTS?

EA extend the Tolkien license-to-print-money

Electronic Arts is working on a brand new Lord of the Rings game. This comes following EA recently renewing its deal with New Line Cinema and Tolkien Enterprises to make games based upon both the hugely successful films and on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings novels until the end of 2008.

Interesting news, in light of the fact that Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar, Codemasters’ highly anticipated online RPG based on Tolkien’s books (but, weirdly NOT the films) is released on an unsuspecting world later next month.

According to MCV, EA has confirmed that the ‘all new’ LOTR game is not a return to the on-hold RPG The White Council. Yet, despite our constant badgering, EA is steadfastly refusing to give us any further information on the type or genre of the next LOTR game, merely stating that a new LOTR title is due in 2008, with more details to follow soon. So we currently have no idea if the game is another MMO, FPS (shooter/swordplay!), RPG or RTS?

The smart money is on a follow up to last year's RTS Battle for Middle Earth 2 making use of the much-improved control mechanic developed for the new Command and Conquer: Tiberium Wars.

SPOnG will be sure to keep a close eye on this and keep you updated as soon as we hear or unearth more.

Meanwhile, if you want to pre-order your copy of Lord of the Rings Online, saving a few quid on your subs in the process, then head over to the LOTRO website right now.
