PS3 Launch: Sony Gives Away £250,000 Free Booty

Amazing Bravia TV giveaway - launch event pics inside

SPOnG turned up to Oxford Street's Virgin's 'Megashop' for the PS3 launch earlier last night (pictures below) only to see an amazing 125 punters each pick up a FREE £2k Bravia TV.

"That's around £250,000 of TV's at retail cost," SCE UK PR Manager, Jonathan Fargher, informed SPOnG earlier on tonight.

Wow! Impressive stuff Sony. With your expensive, high quality consumer electronics brand you are really spoiling us.

So, while many expected the official UK PlayStation 3 launch to be somewhat muted - and it was, at first - it eventually turned into quite a party atmosphere - once the gathered horde had found out they had pretty much just been given a free £2,000 bonus big telly in addition to their free copy of Resistance: Fall of Man with their PS3 today. But enough about that, what about hobnobbing with the videogame industy cognoscenti?

"I'm very happy" a beaming Phil Harrison told SPOnG when we managed to collar him amongst the fray.

Are we talking relief here then Phil?

"Yeah, at last it's out there! It's nice to have it out all around the world now," Harrison told us.

Although Phil did tell us he was surprised to see more members of the media than actual punters at the event. But hey, that just means your PR minions are doing their job Mr Harrison. Finally!

Cynics may say that the numerous journalists in the queues were perhaps tipped off about the free £2k Sony Bravia TVs. But not us. We're not bitter. We'd just advise you to watch out on eBay in the coming days for a glut of untouched Bravias!

The main thing to celebrate is the fact that Sony PlayStation 3 is finally here. Finally. It's been a slow gestation and a difficult, long and protracted labour, yet the shiny new generation baby is finally out.

However, with Xbox 360 and Wii topping 10 million and 6 million sales (respectively) Sony's new gen hope has got some serious catching up to do.

Now we can all finally get on with the important business of discussing, making, playing and (productively) criticising games. The next generation, Sony just told us tonight, has now begun.

...catch up it will, although...? What? You didn't finish the line in the 2nd from last paragraph. Must be all the excitement.

So Sony f**ked you then?

We'd just advise you to watch out on eBay in the coming days for a glut of untouched Bravias!

Oh, c'mon even the most freebied up journo in the world won't have a plasma in EVERY room just yet. One of those Bravias would look nice in the toilet.
