Sony: PS3 Launch Delay 'Beneficial'
SCEE president, David Reeves, has said that the delay of the PS3 launch in Europe has “really been beneficial”.

Speaking with Reuters, Reeves said:

”I think what it has been is rather like taking a bottle of soda water, and we've shaken it so hard over the last six months that when we take the cork off it's just going to explode.”

Soda water? Corks? We were all expecting champagne, and we get soda water? SPOnG's glad that Sony feels the delay's working out for them. Sony fans and retailers, however, might see the wait differently.

Italian retailers certainly didn't seem to be seeing the benefit of a March 23rd launch date when they started selling the PS3 this morning.

Reeves, however, seems fairly pleased with his analogy. He added, “I think that's a better way to look at it than to say the delay's been disappointing.” It's funny Reeves should say that. SPOnG would probably prefer that way of looking at it if it were a senior Sony executive, too.

Speaking on Sony's thinking behind the benefits of a delayed launch, Reeves said,

"We don't want secret shoppers to go in there and say, 'Ah, it's not out of stock, therefore it's not selling.' Indeed, what we're trying to say is we want to make it available to the normal shopper who goes in there and says, 'Do you have PlayStation 3?', and they will say, 'Yes.' And the same for the software.”

Having stock on shelves to sell is an interesting strategy, to be sure. A couple of alternatives to bringing this about through a delayed launch spring to SPOnG's mind, however. One would have been for Sony to sort out its production issues. Another would have been more realistic in the first place instead of repeatedly pushing back the launch and treating PAL users as second class gamers.
