Nintendo refuses to publish Rare game, THQ to the rescue

THQ take Nintendo's too blue squirrel in hand

In a surprising move, Nintendo has stated that it won’t release Conker’s Bad Fur Day on the Nintendo 64. The two companies are usually the best of friends but this recent decision would suggest a small rift developing. The reason could be that Conker is going to be an 18-certificate game and Nintendo are a family company who do not want to be associated with bad taste and, as far as Conker’s Bad Fur Day is concerned, we’re talking very bad taste.

Nintendo products are usually aimed towards the younger section of the games playing market but appeal to older gamers because of the refined, enjoyable gameplay. Two reasons why Sony has enjoyed so much success is that they directly targeted the over 16’s market and chose to pursue realistic graphics. Nintendo would have to realise that gamers gradually grow up. With the imminent release of the Game Cube, it is important that both companies cater for all gamers, young or old.

Rare is one of Nintendo’s second party developers, and that means that the big ‘N’ provides them with an unprecedented amount of support. Rare’s Goldeneye is regarded by many as the best N64 game ever and Rare’s support of the N64 has been crucial to its worldwide sales.

Luckily, we are not going to miss out on Conker’s Bad Fur Day thanks to THQ. The company, famous for publishing the WWF Smackdown series, has just announced that they have snatched up the publishing rights for Bad Fur Day. Good news for those who want to be offended, we can’t wait.
