Breathe deeply and sigh with relief with the news that the first 500,000 British subscribers to
PlayStationNetwork won’t have to watch Will Ferrell.
Unlike our American cousins whose PS3 and Blu-ray take-up was incentivised by the “whacky”
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, us Brits have a dose of 007 coming. According to official news out of Sony today:
”…the first 500,000 purchasers of PlayStation 3 who registered on the PlayStationNetwork would receive a Blu-ray disc movie of Casino Royale, starring James Bond newcomer Daniel Craig.”
Yes,
Blu-ray is once again front and centre in Sony’s grand unifying plan (SGUP). SGUP aims to place PlayStation 3 at the centre of the home as the media-hub. Blu-ray becomes the short-term data medium – in the long-term everybody will download everything anyway – and Sony’s ownership of TV, film and music content provides the potential backbreaker for its major competitor – Microsoft.
We’d expect to see more Blu-ray enticements as well as music downloads a la iTunes both tied to the free PlayStation Network the closer we get the to the
March 23rd PS3 PAL launch.
SPOnG's opinion of
Casino Royale is, frankly, low - we would have preferred a Blu-ray version of
The Devil and Daniel Johnston ("Uncomfortable viewing doesn't become any more uncomfortable" says our Andy). That said, the first 20 minutes of the latest Bond chick-flick does feature Sébastien Foucan doing his parkour/street-running - that should be fine in HD!
