Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on VC, XBLA and PS3 Network
Downloadable versions of Capcom’s 16-bit retro classic Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts are heading to Wii’s Virtual Console, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation 3 Network, according to a listing on the Entertainment Software Rating Board’s website.

The game, as you may remember, is notoriously difficult and certainly separates the ‘hardcore’ men from the ‘casual’ Wii-obsessed boys in the SPOnG office!

SPOnG’s put a call in to Capcom today to get confirmation from the horse's mouth, so we’ll fetch you all the info you need (i.e. when it’s out and how much each version will set you back) as soon as we get it.

Remember to check in with SPOnG each Wednesday for all the latest XBLA release news and each Friday for all the latest Nintendo Wii Virtual Console release news.

We wonder which day of the week Sony will try to bag for issuing regular PS3 Network news? Bets in the forum please!

Well, there's one problem with this version of Ghouls'n'Ghosts appearing on anything other than the Wii: Nintendo hold a patent against anyone emulating a Nintendo system on a non-Nintendo system, if I recall correctly. Seeing as how this particular version was created on the SNES and then re-released on the GBA, to be playable on the Xbox they will have to completely recode it so that it's not running in the SNES set-up.

My bet's on Thursday. It's that day almost at the end of the week, it gives them a day to always outdo Micro$oft and Nintendo won't have enough time to counteract anything by Friday. Genius!

Howcome Super Ghost 'n' Ghouls has already appeared on a PS2 Capcom compilation, then?

Because "Super Ghost 'n' Ghouls" isn't the same as Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts. ;)

Sorry, cheap shot but I had to take it. Seriously, though, is it definitely Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts and not something like Ultimate G'n'G? The "Super" was a common addition to game names for SNES versions and, if you look at the Spong story, the databse only carries references to a version on SNES and GBA. It's also possible that the Nintendo patent was registered after the PS2 compilation, meaning that it wasn't covered.

Either way, if this definitely is the SNES version they either have to recode the game or emulate the SNES, with the latter impossible without license/permission from Nintendo.
