By Mark JohnsonRetailers have yet to be advised of their PS3 allocation figures by Sony. The upshot of this is that the console is still not available for pre-order, SPOnG has learned.
SPOnG spoke with a number of retailers to find out if and when the PS3 will be available for pre-order. Unfortunately, the situation has not changed much from the mild state of confusion we reported
last week.
Of the retailers we contacted, a list including Game, GameStation, HMV, Virgin Megastores, Comet, PC World, Toys 'R' Us and Dixons, no-one was taking pre-orders. The common response to our question was "we're still waiting on allocation figures." One cheeky chap at Comet elaborated, saying "after the farce with the Wii, we don't know."
This begs the question of why, nearly a week after the launch announcement, retailers are still unaware of their allocations. SPOnG understands that a meeting will be held in the next couple of weeks between Sony and retailers to discuss the logistics of launch day. This is when launch allocations will be decided.
SPOnG would have thought that these details ought to be hammered out by now. We are, after all, less than two months away from our
second planned European PS3 launch. Retailers, however, should be commended for their restraint. SPOnG knows gamers who are only now getting their pre-ordered Wiis. We're pretty sure they don't want to see a repeat with the PS3.
