Guitar Hero 360 Slips to April

A good thing, bizarrely. Plus latest GH rumour round-up.

One thing is clear. Guitar Hero II on the Xbox 360 is far and away the greatest version of SPOnG’s favourite rock’n’roll sim. We’ve had an all-too-brief hands on with it and it is without a doubt our most-anticipated 360 title coming out over the next few months.

However, according to reliable US retail source GameStop, the game is not going to be out in the US in March, as originally planned, but is now scheduled for release on April 3rd. Which is a Tuesday, bizarrely. They do things like that in topsy-turvy America world.

While no Red Octane reps will confirm or deny that the UK release date will be put back a few weeks, SPOnG can only assume that the earliest we will see the game over here will be Friday 6th April.

What’s more, for a change, we hope that the game has slipped a few weeks. Yes, you read that correctly. We actually want Guitar Hero II on the Xbox 360 to slip. Of course we cannot wait to get our own copies so we can rock out in the comfort of our own squalid bedsits, but there is something else happening in Europe in March, in case you have forgotten.

If Guitar Hero II 360 came out in mid to late March in Europe, as was originally planned then it is highly likely that it would get a little bit lost in the midst of the PS3 hype-machine. So it’s clearly a far better strategy for Activision and RedOctane to hold back a few weeks until that whole hoo-hah dies down, before releasing yet another killer app for 360.

In other GH2 news, while recently ousted original developer Harmonix is claiming to be working on something far more ambitious anyway (is it us or does anyway whiff a bit of “didn’t like them anyway?” playground talk there?!) a Gamespy report this week claims that:

… online multiplayer may not quite be dead yet. According to Red Octane, multiplayer is something they really wanted to get in the game, and may still add via an update down the road. The key, it seems, is co-op play, which is a lot trickier to make work (the pro-tourney mode is essentially two players independently playing against the computer, while co-op requires direct interaction between the players). So, while Red Octane isn't making any promises, we're holding out hope that multiplayer might still show up at some point.

Playing in a band with your mates. Online. With plastic guitars. The dream!

SPOnG spoke to a Red Octane rep in the UK earlier today who wasn’t aware of any immediate plans to implement such a patch to the 360 version. However, he did mention that he wasn’t so sure what the earphone input on the plastic gee-tar was for, so perhaps it’s not such a crazy idea after all?
