Following yesterday’s controversy surrounding the PS3’s European launch date and pricing SPOnG has had word from Sony regarding the European launch.

According to an email sent to all major news sources:
”Sony are planning an announcement about the UK PS3 price and release date early next week.

David Reeves (President and Chief Executive Officer, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) has confirmed again today that we are still on course for a March release.

The price for PS3 in Europe is still €499 and €599 respectively. The higher price for the 60GB model in Ireland is purely down to their local rate of VAT, which is 21%.

Phrases like: “still on course” and “planning an announcement” are obviously vague, so we spoke with Sony directly this morning and were told, in no uncertain terms, that the PS3 European launch “is definitely in March”.

Unfortunately, we’re still going to have to wait for the official announcement (“definitely next week”) as to numbers, dates, times and whether both 20 and 60Gb units will be available in the UK.

We are now waiting to hear officially exactly why the 20GB model won’t be available in Ireland – as reported this week.

SPOnG will be very surprised if the 60GB model does not launch with a retail price of £425 in the UK. In any case, keep your eyes on SPOnG next week for news of the official announcement.

We are still intrigued to know how Sony’s CEO could be so (publicly) poorly informed on the PS3. The product is, after all, crucial to the entire company.

£425 seems like such an odd price, surely they ought to go for £399 instead.

(or even better, £199 :D)

Well PSP and Wii launched at £180 and 360 Core at £220, so wierd prices aren't new. That's what happens when you set your prices to a round figure in one currency and then convert to another (and add some more for good luck).

That Irish VAT tax excuse thingy is strange... Belgium also has a 21% VAT tax on those kind of things... and the scandinavian countries even have higher VAT rates.
