Sega’s just announced Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars – the PSP version of the popular arcade cab-driving mayhem-causing franchise. See the first screens below. Read on for full details.

Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars, which is exclusive to the PSP includes, for the first time, multiplayer modes that allow two people to play cooperatively or competitively.

With no further ado, in the words of the mighty Sega:

”Gamers can relive the addictive, action packed gameplay of the original Dreamcast games, Crazy Taxi and Crazy Taxi 2, on the go….Brand new multiplayer gameplay features provide endless entertainment, players can steal passengers from other cabbies by bumping their opponent’s car … drive through the two original maps of Crazy Taxi, the arcade map and the original Dreamcast map, both inspired by the steep hills, trademark cable cars, and breezy waterfront of San Francisco. Then they’ll head for the Small Apple maps in Crazy Taxi 2, which is inspired by New York’s large building fronts, hectic downtown streets, and the city’s famous Central Park and subway system.

SPOnG wholeheartedly agrees with Sega Europe’s Creative Director, Matt Woodley, pictured above - even though we are jealous beyond words of his job title - who says of Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars, “We’ve often thought that the sublime playability of our Crazy Taxi franchise was perfectly suited to the PSP format. Now with new gameplay features and including superb multiplayer modes we’re really confident that gamers will agree…The heady mix of competitive gameplay and vibrant graphics makes this a winner, in my humble opinion!”

We like to imagine that Matt’s job at Sega is just to sit around playing Sega classics on Dreamcast all day long and then having random thoughts such as that he expressed above. However, we unfortunately know that the reality – much like every high-ranking videogame exec - probably involves lots of tedious meetings and late-night office sessions which may well annoy his partner who wants him to have more of a social life. Still what would you give to have ‘Creative Director, Sega Europe’ on your business card? (Answers in forum!)

Single-player modes in Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars include the mission-based Arcade mode, where skilled drivers earn time bonuses, and Time Trial mode where drivers collect the highest fares possible in the time allowed.

There are also the mandatory mini-games, with two mini-game training modes: Crazy Box, a collection of 16 original Crazy Taxi mini-games and Crazy Pyramid, mini-games arranged in a pyramid that drivers must complete to unlock more mini-games from Crazy Taxi 2.

Then, most excitingly, we’ll get the new multiplayer modes where two cabbies can collaborate or compete wirelessly. You can also record and save gameplay on the PSP system's memory stick to replay and show off. Should you be a total Sega nerd.

Release is down for ‘Summer 2007’.

Doubt they'd put that on Live though it would be a nice inclusion. Seems Live is only good for 2D games at the moment.

Nice to have this for PSP, which seems to be getting a lot of PS2 and Xbox games now they are winding down.
