SCE President’s Keynote Broadband Speech Details
Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi delivered a keynote speech today, outlining Sony’s plans for broadband online gaming.

"Starting this year, fiber-optic broadband Internet connections will start spreading widely across Japan. Once this environment which enables 100-Megabit transmissions is set, two-way broadband communications are sure to explode among PlayStation and PlayStation 2 users. I believe PlayStation 2 is the most powerful device for pushing the development and acceptance of broadband forward. It is this broadband capability that will allow the world to come together as one," said Kutaragi.

The important phrase in this speech is “allow the world to come together as one.” Many thought Sony had missed the boat somewhat, releasing a new console with no online functions. It is now looking like Sony just waited for the right boat to come along. As broadband connectivity becomes more common, true low-ping Internet gaming will become a reality.

Kutaragi also spoke about the history of the industry and the success of the PlayStation and PlayStation 2.
