Nintendo to Sell 21 Million Wii Games and 100 Million DS Games
For all the talk of Wii, it’s the DS that has enabled Nintendo to up its net profit forecast by 20-billion yen (£86,549,482) for this financial year (ending March 2007 - using Japanese accounting methods). This means that net income for the period is predicted to rise from 100-billion yen (£432,875,866) to 120-billion yen (£519,414,470) compared with last October’s estimate of 100 billion yen.

The Kyoto-based company made the announcement in Japan this week, pointing out that global sales across all its divisions were expected to hit 900-billion yen (£3,895,085,920). This is up on last October’s expectation of 740-billion yen (£3,202,991,754).

This news is, according to Nintendo, down to sales of DS and DS Lite. For this fiscal year, it has upped sales expectations for the DS by three-million - from 20-million to 23-million units.

According to Bloomberg News, Nintendo’s stock more than doubled in value last year, becoming the Topix index's third-best performing stock.

To put things in perspective, eight of the ten best-selling games in Japan last year were DS titles, including New Super Mario Brothers, Mario Cart and Tetris. PSP's best-selling title was 30th on the chart.

So, with DS providing the solid foundation, financial news sources are now bubbling with excitement over what’s being called the ‘unexpected success’ of the Wii.

Edwin Merner, president of Atlantis Investment Research Corp. in Tokyo commented, “Nintendo is going like gangbusters, and the Wii consoles are selling like hotcakes…They have momentum, and I think you can expect them to surpass earnings estimates for the next year or two.''

Nintendo is sticking by estimates that of six-million Wiis by the end of March, it has raised its Wii software sales forecast to 21 million units from 17 million. Yuuta Sakurai, an analyst at Nomura Research Institute Ltd, told Bloomberg, “The Wii hardware target is the number the company can make by the end of March, not the number they can sell….Sales momentum is very strong.''
