2006 ended on a high for the gaming industry, with the final sales figures showing a 6.7% increase on 2005. EA in particular came out smiling as the number of weeks it sat at the top of the charts cemented at 27.
The predictable sales drop-off following Christmas was to a tune of 13%. This still left the week ending January 30th with the honour of being the third biggest in game sales of the year, however.
As we all dashed out to spend our Greedmas money EA capped off the year with
FIFA '07 nudging
Need For Speed: Carbon out of pole position and down to Number 3. As the eight weeks it spent at Number 1 was the first time such a feat's been seen since
Medal of Honour: Front Line, however, we're pretty sure EA's not complaining.
Konami's
Pro Evolution Soccer 6 shimmies its way up from Number 3 to Number 2, giving footy games a chart-topping close to 2006.
EA's
The Sims2: Pets and Activision's
Call of Duty 3 executed a high-precision switch as the former sneaks up to Number 4, shooting down the latter to Number 5.
The post-Christmas sales have a direct impact on the charts most notably with Rockstar's
Canis Canem Edit. It leaps from Number 20 back into the Top 10 at Number 8. SPOnG suspects it might also have something to do with gamers spending their aunty's Christmas cash on on games they
actually want.
Other titles taking a leap include EA's
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007 climbing from Number 22 to Number 12 and
Tomb Raider: Legend making a massive jump from Number 39 to Number 13.
On the all-ages front things don't look quite so gleeful. Midway's
Happy Feet drops a cool 14 places from Number 7 to Number 21 whilst Eidos's
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire: Party Edition slides from Number 14 to Number 23. It would appear that folk had quite enough of Chris Tarrant's grinning mug on Christmas telly.
Things also don't look too spiffing for Nintendo either, with none of its exclusive titles making the Top 40.
And that's the state of play for the charts leaving 2006.
