Nintendo has been strangely quiet to date about the ways in which the DS and the Wii will work together to bring new gameplay experiences for users. It’s clearly part of the long-term strategy and the UK’s DS Product Manager James Honeywell has gone on record this week to confirm, in a typically vague Nintendo way, that full Wii/DS interoperability should be with us sometime next year.

Speaking to august industry organ, MCV earlier this week, Honeywell (pictured here at this year's MCV awards with marketing director, Dawn Paine) said, “You will definitely see Wii and DS interoperability as soon as we have it finished…We haven’t made any announcements over specific software for connectivity, but there are definitely a number of exciting things in creation which we want to bring to market as soon as possible. We’re hopeful that will be next year.”

“Our competitors might offer connectivity between formats, but it concentrates on media capabilities, rather than the fun and interaction you’ll get when you bring our two consoles together…. For example, the connectivity between Xbox 360 and PC is very much based in streaming video and other media. The link-up between Wii and DS will be much more about offering new forms of gameplay, fun and interaction. It will offer yet another new set of experiences for the whole family.”

SPOnG has put a call in to James today to find out more about the specific features which will make up the Wii/DS interoperability and more about the specific ways in which our well-loved Nintendo franchises might make use of them.

I really do wonder about these remarks and the fact that the new Dragon Quest game is going to be a ds exclusive. I am wondering what exactly they mean by ds exclusive. It could mean that you are required to have a ds to play but it may also require a wii. I cannot imagine for a second that Square Enix would place their highest rated game solely on a hand held. I mean I would play it and love it, but i do prefer playing deep rpg's in a more comfortable manner.

Now imagine if you used the ds as the controller for the game and you have the responsibility to keep up with what is going on, on your DS screens as well as what is happing on the main tube.

This is completely a theory, but imagine if this were true...this would put the Wii (and the DS) as the real force to reckon with this generation as this could not be done with the x360 or ps3.

I cant wait to see the projects they will reveal with ds and wii in mind.

They are a lot of reasons why Square-Enix should put Dragon Quest on the DS.
1) Ds is the hardware juggernaught these days in Japan out selling all other hardware...combined...by a large margin what amounts to a huge installed base of almost 15 million (10% of Japan's population) in 2 years.
2) lower development time and cost
3) combine one and two and you have BIG profits at the end. Now how can someone refuse BIG profits...except SEGA...and Capcom...
4) Wii and PS3 don't have the installed base yet to justify for them to make one on both platforms...PS3 having th extra con that it is highly expensive to make a game for it, hence the overload of Dragon quest en Final Fantasy spin-offs on the DS...to finance FFXIII!!

So all you Sony-fans stop bitching! Without the DS you wouldn't had no Final Fantasy for your machine because it wouldn't be worth the investment! I know, very long shot reasoning, but fun to typ anyway...

How about something that's actually adventurous, such as drawing a picture on the DS, using the Wii to move it/shape it in 3D, then putting it back on the DS?

e.g. You could draw a race track on the DS, then play it on the Wii...
