DS Wees On The Competition

Nintendo hits the 2-million mark.

Nintendo and Chart Track have today confirmed that over 2-million DS wonder-toys have been sold in the UK to date. This basically means that DS is the top selling console this year outselling all other handheld or home console products in 2006.

The DS is outselling Sony’s PSP at a rate of over 2.5:1; with top titles Brain Training, Animal Crossing and New Super Mario Bros all having sold over a million each across Europe.

Total software sales to date are still marginally in the PSP's favour despite the fact that the PSP has been on UK sale for six months less than its Nintendo competitor.

As the DS user base has grown to 2-million it has overtaken the PSP in weekly software sales – but the attach rate for the DS remains less than that of the PSP.

An overjoyed David Yarnton, General Manager for Nintendo UK had the following to say about all this, “The ability of Nintendo DS to appeal to both gamers and non-gamers alike through an exciting, fun and innovative portfolio of software has been instrumental in its success in the UK, with many more Touch! Generations games launching this year and into 2007, Nintendo DS will continue to be the main driving force behind the expansion of the video game market this year.”

Lisa Morgan, CEO, Game Group Plc added, "Nintendo are following through on their promise of expanding the gaming audience, which is key to GAME too. This is evident in the broad range of people coming into our stores to purchase both DS hardware and software. Going into 2007, with a great range of software for release, we will continue to work with Nintendo to the best of our ability to broaden the market further."

If you can’t get hold of a Wii before Christmas then you might still be lucky enough to bag a DS Lite in black, white and pink priced for around £99. Go on, treat your mum to a pink DS. It’s what she doesn’t yet know that she’s always wanted!
