It has been revealed to us that Daytona USA 2001 may not support online Internet play when it is released in Europe this April.
“We don’t know at this stage for certain, but it is looking like Daytona will not be online in Europe. At present, nothing has been made official but it is looking likely that the company is planning on phasing out European online play with immediate effect” said our anonymous Sega insider. “Everyone is worried about the reaction of the public and the press if Sega of Japan decides to pull the plug on Europe. There are many gamers that bought the Dreamcast solely for online gaming and Daytona was supposed to be a fine example of this with full online racing.”
As we have already reported, Sega doesn’t want to terminate the Dreamcast’s European servers, but it may have to. As the company focus shifts towards software development, supporting online play for an obsolete platform may become a burden the company is unwilling to shoulder.
“We have had no news at all regarding whether or not the recent decision about Daytona in Europe will have a knock-on effect on any other titles or territories. At present Sega’s online shop is operational in Japan and the States but not in Europe. This may prove a deciding factor when it comes to cutting off a territory.”
