Check it out! It’s the first official US Wii TV commercial and it’s available for your viewing pleasure right here.
The ad features two smiling, middle-aged Japanese businessmen rocking up in an iddy-biddy Smart car to ask a bunch of Manhattan-dwelling hipsters what ‘We would like to play?'. The multi-racial gang then goes on to get stuck into some
Zelda and
Metroid.
It’s cleverly executed to appeal to both the non-gaming, aspirational ‘lifestyle’ consumer – with the slightly cute, foreigness of the product (the Smart car, the bowing Japanese suits) and the ultra-cool Manhattan pad both highlighted for maximum effect.
This is an ad that is going to successfully and strongly appeal to non-gamers because, more than anything (and unlike most videogame ads) the focus is on the gamers playing the game, and not on in-game footage. Although the tantalising glimpses of
Zelda and
Metroid are enough to get gamers’ juices flowing at the same time.
