Strange Japanese Businessmen Deliver Wii to NYC Hipsters

First US Wii TV commercial deconstructed right here.

Check it out! It’s the first official US Wii TV commercial and it’s available for your viewing pleasure right here.

The ad features two smiling, middle-aged Japanese businessmen rocking up in an iddy-biddy Smart car to ask a bunch of Manhattan-dwelling hipsters what ‘We would like to play?'. The multi-racial gang then goes on to get stuck into some Zelda and Metroid.

It’s cleverly executed to appeal to both the non-gaming, aspirational ‘lifestyle’ consumer – with the slightly cute, foreigness of the product (the Smart car, the bowing Japanese suits) and the ultra-cool Manhattan pad both highlighted for maximum effect.

This is an ad that is going to successfully and strongly appeal to non-gamers because, more than anything (and unlike most videogame ads) the focus is on the gamers playing the game, and not on in-game footage. Although the tantalising glimpses of Zelda and Metroid are enough to get gamers’ juices flowing at the same time.

Nah, still far too much focus on in-game footage. They should do a lot more of the player standing in front of the TV so you can see both at once, i.e. what happens at 19-20 seconds in that video.

Even as a non-non-gamer, I find just staring at most in-game footage damn boring. Playing it is the whole point, so show people playing it!
