Play Gears of War next week

SPOnG is mustard-keen to get stuck in to this year’s most visceral, violent and downright beautiful action game, Epic’s Gears of War, and we know that you are too.

So, you’ll be glad to know that you can get an early-hands on with the game at the Xbox 360 Games Tour. The tour kicks off in the city once known as Madchester and now more commonly referred to as ‘Ohmygod!He’sGotAGun!-chester’ (Manchester, dammit! Ed) this Friday (October 20th). It continues its tour of the England through to early December.

It’s clearly Microsoft’s attempt to counter the inevitable hype surrounding the Wii launch in early December (not to mention the PS3 launching in Japan and the US).

Not only is the MightySoft drumming up some much-needed publicity for the 360, more specifically, it’s beating that same drum in support of its two main flagship titles for Christ’s mass 2007: Rare’s kid-friendly Viva Pinata, and Cliffy B’s kid-unfriendly Gears of War.

Microsoft’s reps will be touring hill and dale in a big, yet jolly, green bus as they show off the latest Xbox Live Arcade games, as well as new peripherals such as the wireless racing wheel.

Note that you will also need proof of age to play Gears, so you might want to leave the little brothers at home. Microsoft, as SPOnG reported last week, takes the whole issue of age-ratings and promoting safe gaming for children very seriously indeed. As it should, oh yes indeed.

The tour dates are as follows (with Gears of War not available until the Newcastle leg):

  • Manchester: 20, 21, 22, 23 & 24 October - Trafford Centre
  • Newcastle: 26, 27, 28 & 29 October - Metro Centre

  • Birmingham: 3, 4 & 5 November - The Bullring

  • Sheffield: 11 & 12 November - Meadowhall

  • Southampton: 25 & 26 November - West Quays

  • London: 2 & 3 December – Lakeside
