SEGA’s just sent word that a Phantasy Star Universe (Xbox 360, MMO) open beta test starts this weekend, running until Wednesday October 18th. So, if you are an Xbox Live Gold member, there’s your weekend gone.

The download is a piffling 980 MB. All that the good people of SEGA want in return for giving you a free shot at the MMO that all the fashionable online gamers are talking about, is that you give them a bit of feedback on the game at the official phantasystaruniverse.com website.

Phantasy Star Universe is due out on Xbox 360 from 24th November, offering, in SEGA’s own words, “the best of both worlds through an exciting action-packed RPG single-player story mode and a rich online multiplayer experience.”

SEGA has also informed us that 360, PC and PS2 PSU players will also be able to purchase the ‘The GUARDIANS License’ which, “enriches the single-player story mode by enabling gamers to meet other players, strike up alliances, and embark on a huge variety of online quests within the Phantasy Star Universe environment. The GUARDIANS License will be available at ¤9.99 (£6.99) per month."

I did the download in the wee hours this morning (3 AM Pacific time - WHEE!)

The server finally connected and let me create a character around 7 AM. It then promptly crashed during the tutorial, freezing the machine and forcing a hard re-set.

I caution patience. Looks like this beta is going to be more frustrating than some. I'll try again tonight.
