As we told you last week, Microsoft is indeed sitting on a new major franchise for the Xbox Live Arcade service. And as you'll already be aware, that franchise is Doom, id Software's beloved first-person shooter!
Doom should be released to Live subscribers within the next few hours and will cost a mere 800 Market Place Points. The rework of the PC classic will feature such new-world goodies as full Dolby 5.1 sound, split-screen co-op and multiplayer modes, as well as tagging single-player achievements to active Live accounts.
Multiplayer hosts up to four players per session - some compensation for those who would have hoped for a chance to relive their days of LAN glory with users around the world. We'll bring you further details as we get them.

Seems like a bargain to me. I get to invite my mates round for four-player splitscreen, we can all sit on my sofa and drink beer and have a monster session on the game. Can't do that with a free version on my PC.
In fact I'd be surprised if it's very easy to even get Doom running on Windows XP. And I'd bet money the networking wouldn't work no matter what you did.
Which brings me to the other big attraction... Doom deathmatch over Xbox Live. Just plain awesome.
To me, that's worth a few quid (didn't think 800 points = 7 quid but you could be right, I lose track).

not just that, but both DOOM1 and DOOM2 are already available to play with the XBOX version of DOOM3: Resurrection of Evil, including split screen deathmatch or co-op (and it goes for about £5 these days).
