Sega are continuing to display their flair for original titles with sound-based action game, K-Project. Sega’s Tetsuya Mizuguchi appeared on the popular Japanese documentary show, Nippon TV, and took the opportunity to unveil and publicise new details of the game.
The idea behind the development from the Space Channel 5 team is to incorporate musical notes into what at first appears to be a shoot-em-up. The game typically features aggressive enemies, but what is different is how the use of musical sounds is incorporated as a method of combat. You will be given control of a number of what can only be described as musical weapons. Similar to Sony’s Fantavision, you can lock onto multiple enemies before firing fatal beams of light at them. Different sound types, such as beats and chords can be achieved by taking certain enemies out in specific order. How these sounds will affect gameplay and progression remain to be seen and heard. This suggests the game is still in the early stages of development. At this stage, K-Project could result as either a light-hearted, stylish party game or a full-on adventure. Whichever way it turns out, the finished product should be worth a close look.
Originally destined for the Dreamcast, Sega’s decision to pull out of the hardware market means it is likely that K-Project will be ported across to PlayStation 2 and Xbox.
