Contrary to recent rumours, Psygnosis and Sony are dismissing reports of a slipped release schedule for WipEout Fusion, the first title in the futuristic racing series to be developed for the PS2. Despite industry publications printing details of an Easter release for WipEout Fusion, Sony is insisting the proposed release date has been “September for Europe” for quite some time. The decision to push the game back to September was made with the intention of giving the Liverpool-based Psygnosis development team the time to produce the title as a definitive sequel and not a half-hearted update.
While previous details of the game indicated updated track designs only, Psygnosis and Sony have now disclosed further details supporting their claim that Fusion is going to be more than a re-tread of previous versions. Fusion will now boast 24 separate track routes that reduce similarities to the linear approach of the previous three games. A ship upgrade system, with game progression similar to that in Gran Turismo, will be incorporated, showing that Psygnosis has approached Fusion primarily as a “simulator”, though real-life futuristic racing is something we can only fantasise about.
A specific date for release in September is unconfirmed, although a September 29th launch would mark the six-year anniversary of the franchise perfectly.
