Sega consultant Tetsu Kayame, has revealed that the company is working with role-playing giants Squaresoft to develop “something huge”.

At present, the two companies are refusing to divulge any further information, but Sega has said that it will be something “only possible in the arcade division of the industry”. Whether or not the project, currently kept under secrecy, will be hardware or software-based remains unanswered.

The choice of a Squaresoft partnership does imply the possibility of an arcade role-playing game. Possibly linked to Squaresoft’s current production of Final Fantasy XI or Sega’s Phantasy Star Online. Creating an arcade game of such magnitude could prove too big a challenge for one company. How this project could be managed to suit coin-op play is raises further questions. But the idea of a role-playing game in an arcade environment is an intriguing concept.

More information is unlikely to be revealed until May’s E3 show in Los Angeles.
