Codemasters raised a few eyebrows when it announced the revival of the Sensible brand. The rebirth of everybody's favourite football game, from the time when Amiga reigned supreme, provoked in many a mix of excitement and fear. This is the now familiar feeling that accompanies any announcement that a once great game is to be levered from the grave and paraded, zombie-like, for our morbid edification.
Thankfully, developer Kuju's masterful and sympathetic update of Sensible Soccer was similar enough to bring back waves of halcyon pleasure, and different enough to make it worth playing over the original. It was, dare we say, the first non-PES footie game to arouse any interest in us for years.
Now Codemasters wants to play necromancer again, and as we speak, is cackling maniacally and brandishing sparking electrodes over the plundered corpse of Sensible's Cannon Fodder.
Interestingly, the game will be exclusive to PSP. It will feature four player link-up, and, like any self-respecting war game these days, feature sniper rifles and flamethrowers. It is to retain the overhead, super deformed stylings of the original, and is scheduled for release next spring. It's also worth remembering that the Codesters released Cannon Fodder on the Game Boy Color in 2000. And it was rather good.
