Leipzig: Nintendo Conference – Full Rundown

Pink DS Lite, plus Mario Strikers Charged and Battalion Wars II for Wii.

No. Before we start, we’ll not keep you waiting with some pointless filler text. They didn’t announce the final price or the release date of the Wii, and yes, we are gutted. It looks likely that we are going to have to wait until next month’s Tokyo Game Show for the news that everyone’s chomping at the bit for.

There were some interesting announcements made though, so more of those below, whilst SPOnG’s team on the ground out in Germany heads over to the Microsoft conference (more later from that).

Sitting dejectedly on the floor at the packed, chaotic conference over on Nintendo’s stand was an inauspicious start for SPOnG’s man on the ground, as he joined the rest of the media hordes (whores?) who had gathered, mostly in hope of the major Wii announcements many were expecting.

The presentation was given in German by Nintendo’s German MD Bernd Fakesch and translated into English via special 'Nintendo Translata-tron' headsets, and after SPOnG soon realizsed a Wii price/release announcement was not on the cards, we started instead to pay attention to what they actually were telling us, which turned out to be news of two rather cheeky little new Wii games and a pink DS for Europe this Christmas.

Fakesch rolled out the always-expected but admittedly impressive sales stats, noting that Nintendo now has over 5 million DS owners across Europe, and that females make up 44% of all Nintendo DS owners in Germany. He continued to ram home the key message, which we’ve heard countless times now; that with Touch! Generations, Nintendo is demonstrably appealing to and winning over both traditional gamers and non-gamers.

German quiz show host Joerg Pilawa was wheeled on to give a testimonial about the amazing-ness of the DS. If you are not aware, Pilawa is the German equivalent of the UK’s Chris Tarrant (he hosts the German equivalent of ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’). At this point, SPOnG’s attention span snapped and we began eyeing up the ‘old-school’ dancing girls that had been wheeled on, purely for the purpose of bored journos like us to shamelessly ogle.

Anyways, snapping our tongue back into our mouth and wiping away the dribble, we began to scribble some more hasty notes about those new announcements, the Kuju-developed Battalion Wars II for Wii and Mario Strikers Charged (the Wii version of Mario Smash Football). German footballer Philipp Lahm gave a short video message introducing the latter, which seemed to raise a small amount of Teutonic excitement amongst the natives in the press throng. And as for Battalion Wars II, we remember mainly that Nintendo is very excited about the control mechanism.

Oh, and Europe will get a pink DS Lite in October, so there’s something you can buy all the females in your family and circle of friends. Unless of course, they are lesbian feminist avengers, in which case they might take offence. Plus, it’s not as pink as the already-announced pink PS2 and PSP, not that we really care, but that was what we observed.

So all in all, an interesting couple of new Wii titles, which SPOnG will of course bring you more info and assets on as soon as we get them. And a pink variation on DS Lite. It was fairly low key and, dare we say it, disappointing.

That must have been the most unexciting conference ever.

Nice to see Kuju getting some more encourgement for a Battlion Wars sequel. Mario Strikers I'll have to check out if the sequel is due too.

Hey we are used to Nintendo teasing us with small bites of info. This is just another day of Nintendo being Nintendo. Think of them as the Willy Wonka of games and you'll understand why they don't reveal too much.

A pink DS will please those that desire it. Shame there's no news on LoZ:TP though. I'd really like to know how much we'll have to pay for each version.

Hope the GC copy is cheaper.

You pleople left out the best bit!!

Battalion Wars II (short it's BWii...he...he...he...k, not good) en Mario Stirkers Charge will be ONLINE to play....ONLINE!!! BWII having 3 onlinemodes, one being Co-op.

And then some minor details like naval units in BWII (5 of them being Battelship, submarine, Juggernaught, Transport and then something).

You know what this means? ONLINE MARIO MULTIPLAYER GAMES!!! This is the one thing Nintendo needed to make Xbox Live look like a waste of money. Imagine Mario kart Wii online, Mario Party Wii online, Mario Tennis online, Mario Golf Online, it's like huge frikkin online multiplayer orgy of fun!

mebbe they figured staying relatively quiet was the best strategy, given Sony's recent woes, why take the focus off that?

They're taking too long now. They've been teasing for a year or so, and they need to get down to it and release solid details on the system: price, exactly launch date, exact/final launch titles etc.

You can drag things on for too long. This is now too long in my book.

We're only three months from launch for Christ's sake.

I'm expecting the same price. It almost wouldn't surprise me if the GC one doesn't get a release.

My instincts tell me, I'd much rather play this on GC BTW ;).

I can get that... but i still think Nintendo is running down all the scenario's (read:pack-ins) down at headquarters.

Besides, keeping quiet and leaving us crums is a huge strategic succes...what's the most talked about console to date? Wii.

And we know a lot actually...we know that the Wii could possibly have the best launch, game and supply-wise, ever or at least since the SNES in Nintendo-terms. We know in what month, kinda, we know the maximum price and pricing for the games. We just know about it in a inconventional way and that's offcourse a problem for a conservative minded person as you.

That's why i believe your instincts are s**te anyways.

Play has both down to be launched on Christmas Day! Although this is subject to change.
The GC version is going for £29.99
The Wii version is going for £49.99

We can only hope these are guess-timates!

Yep. I'm agreeing with this being too long and drawn out a saga.
Sure it keeps a lot of interest and questions floating around about Wii but also when it drags on and on, you lose interest.

This isn't a comment on Spong's reporting or anything, but I've read that article several times, looked at other site's reports too and someone please tell me what exactly did they prove?
"We've got lots of people playing our games"

Big deal.
You'd have even more if you release that damn console!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, was Nintendo's promise: "We promise to tell you f**k all, ever."? Because calling a conference so utterly devoid of anything Wii Keep Our Promise is a bit of a misnomer.
