Codemasters has just sent us this first batch of screens on the first next gen outing of one of our favourite driving game series. Colin McRae: Dirt is the name of the game, which, whilst we do have our reservations, is, we suppose, better than Colin McRae Rally 7.
The Colin McRae series has sold over eight million games since its first outing on PS1 back in the late nineties and if you have played any of the previous games it's not hard to see why. The game is just pure fun and, Codies assure us, "Colin McRae: DIRT TM is set to be the most diverse and exhilarating off-road racing experience ever with sensational gravel, mud and dirt events the world over."
Race some serious 850bhp muscle cars, drifting on the loose gravel and high-speed blind corners as you tackle loads of new courses, including all 12.4 miles of the world famous Pikes Peak International - 150 precarious turns to negotiate through the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
The press release goes on to inform us that: "With an incredible range of off-road vehicles, thrill-packed tracks, modes that make the most of online multiplayer, and more varied events than any other single-championship rally game, Colin McRae is being reborn as a bigger, faster, wilder racing experience."
Tackle the toughest desert terrain in Rally Raid competitions, switch between dirt and road on the Rally Cross events, where crashing into your opponents is pretty much an inevitable part of the fun.
Codies still has more off-road racing styles to be revealed, plus has confirmed that Colin McRae: DIRT "will also offer a dedicated mode for European, International and Global rally championships featuring official 2WD, 4WD, Classic and RWD rally cars."
But what about that name? Did nobody tell them about Motley Crue's 'The Dirt'? The filthiest story of rock and roll debauchery yet known to man?
SPOnG is pretty sure there is no connection between the clean-living, taciturn Scot McRae and the bunch of good-for-nothing smackheads that made up Motley Crue, but we'll be checking with Codemasters to find out.
Plus, we'll be bothering them for an interview with the taciturn Scot himself. And if we can swing one then our aim will be to get him to answer our questions in sentences with more than four words in them!
Seriously, back to the game. This is going to be a
PlayStation 3 powerhouse of a game, so keep watching this space for more concrete details on more features and a definite release date as soon as we get it. (And yes, we know its on PC and 360, but for SPOnG Colin McRae games have always seemed just
better on PlayStation).
