The University of Big Brain Academy

Nintendo proves that some games definitely are good for you.

We all had a good old chuckle earlier at kerrr-azzy Jeff Minter’s comments about the DS Lite being the PSP’s “...ugly sister that’s better in the sack.” It has to be said that Minter hasn't lost the knack to come up with a funny, snappy soundbite quote, despite decades of pies and drugs doing untold damage to his mental and physical well-being.

Yet who are we to judge. We love pies and drugs (but only certain kinds, and always in moderation, kids) and we also love the ugly duckling that is our old grey DS. That’s because the boss has nicked our new DS Lite, so we have to make do with this gargantuan pre-2006 brick of a handheld. But we don’t mind. We’re not bitter. Mainly because Nintendo just keep on churning out top-quality games which we just want to show off to everybody, including our Gran and strangers on the bus.

Today is yet another golden DS launch day, as Nintendo releases Big Brain Academy across Europe so you can pit your wits against family and friends to see who really is the biggest brainbox.

The title’s already shifted 1.2 million copies in Japan and, while SPOnG doubts Nintendo will see the same kind of take up here, we are confident that the game will sell well and be a top addition to the big N's growing Touch! Generation range of titles.

So, what is it? In a nutshell, it’s 15 wacky games which test both your mental agility and your reaction time in areas including maths, logic, memory and analysis. So, strictly speaking, it’s like schoolwork. But fun. Plus, it will calculate the ‘weight’ of your brain, grade you (by letter) and tell you what other professions or which famous people from history have the same brain ‘weight’ as you.

It’s in the shop up the road from you or the Internet super-highway now. It’s a smidgen under £30. It’s good for keeping your brain from turning into mush through watching too much Big Brother and reading too many celebrity magazines. So go get one.
