New Nintendo Patents Viewed Upside-down
Nintendo Company Limited has registered some new trademarks, according to reports popping up over the weekend. These include WiiPointer, WiiCulture and, perhaps most interesting of all, !!M. None of the trademarks were accompanied by explanations, though the scale of Wii as a lifestyle-driven gaming and entertainment hub is starting to reveal itself gradually.

WiiCulture is likely a portal through which Nintendo will extend its reach from core gaming into other entertainment areas, all speculation of course. However, !!M, Wii presented upside-down, might well be an instant messenger application. Probably...

As to what WiiPointer could be is anyone's guess. The Wiimote acts as a pointing device, so perhaps it refers to browsing software, perhaps an arts or entertainment package. Either way, along with WiiCulture, WiiPointer will almost certainly make for some kind of interesting announcement in the coming weeks.

Feel free to speculate away and check back for concrete explanations of all of the above as soon as Nintendo comes clean.

Silly boy, "WiiPointer" is obviously a possible official name for "Wiimote" aka "Free Hand Controller".

Let's hope so as "WiiMote" is the most annoying term ever created and made me stop reading spong for the past two months.

At least it's better than "RevMote". And we didn't make up WiiMote, it's all over the web, so you can't have read anything for the past two months.

Yep, it's definately been difficult getting any Nintendo news lately, perhaps I shouldn't be such a pedantic swine.

It isn't just WiiMote that really grinds though, it's the old ones too such as 'Shigsy' and 'Ninty', is the entire of games journalism staffed by 12 year olds or what?

(BTW, none of this is meant to course offence to any Spong staff or anyone at all. just being opinionated and bored at work).

Do you complain when the 'papers do the same over footballer's names, though? Not having a dig, just wondering whether it's the fact that everyone calls Nintendo childish and you just think that this reinforces it, or whether you really do have a problem with this nickname/shortening rubbish.

No, I don't think so.
WiiPointer doesn't come close to explaining what the Wii Controller does, so why would Nintendo undersell it with a name not illustrative of its actual functionality?

WiiPointer will something much bigger...

If I remember correctly, they've referred to it as "pointer" several times.

People have, though I'm not sure Nintendo has in any official way. Certainly, everyone I spoeak to at Nintendo, at all levels, just cals it 'the controller'.

I think Wii Pointer might have refered to the shooting gallery demo though I'm not sure.

I'd appreciate any links you have on the subject.
