Here are the first screens and information on Polish developer, Nibris' forthcoming DS Shoot-Em-Up, tentatively titled, Raid Over the River, due for an early 2007 release.
The game is the first title in a planned series of two, with all that's been revealed about the yet-to-be-announced follow-up is that it will be for Nintendo Wii.
Nibris' Marek Oko, the game's designer had the following to say (in poorly translated English) about Raid Over the River: "It's a title which is going to change the current image of a vertical shooter as a meaningless, arcade game which only tests the speed of player's fingers. It is a title which is going to present how big potential, which was not used so far, this kind of games has. It is also a game which through relation to the classics, innovative original solutions, and extensive storyline is going to make playing it an experience one of a kind."
Well, you get the gist. It's a classic 2D Shoot-Em-Up with ambition, which SPOnG has to admit we like the sound of.
The story takes place over the course over 3000 years, featuring six campaigns to play through - including ancient Greece, Europe during World War II, Soviet Russia during the Cold War, present day USA, Germany circa 2018 and Japan at some point in an unspecified future.
In the game you play as agent Carrie Collins (29, pictured right) a pilot in an air strike quick response group of the Temporal Advanced Research Projects Agency (TARPA). Collins is able to flit between the above-mentioned places in time, due to the "sensational discovery" of some artefact from ancient Peru by TARPA. Or something like that. Perhaps that bit of the story needs fleshing out a bit.
Each location features a different vehicle, plus loads of weapons, including sonic blasters and plasma cannons as well as various special attacks, such as help from the wingmen, intelligent missiles, particle blasters, gravity bombs, or a laser attack from a satellite.
Raid Over the River also features a novel system of dodges including rotation, nose-diving, barrel-rolls and so on, enabling much more precise control of your craft. It will make use of the DS's touch-screen and microphone and feature a number of single player modes (story, arcade and dogfight), a multi-player co-op mode plus other modes, which are currently listed as 'Special', 'The Raid' and 'Raid Over the Galaxy'.
It all sounds barking mad in a very good way, and we can't wait to see it when it finally arrives in 2007. In the meantime check out the first batch of screens right here.
