Cutbacks announced for Codemasters
UK based software house Codemasters are to lay off up to 100 members of staff. These redundancies will take place throughout their UK and international divisions. This move is designed to reduce their running costs and trim operating expenses.

The video game industry is undergoing a transitional period. We have recently seen the demise of the Nintendo 64 and the Dreamcast. The PlayStation 2 is slow off the mark and many gamers are waiting for the new next-generation consoles like the Gamecube and Xbox.

Jim Darling, Codemasters' Chairman, said, "It's distressing to lose such talented and loyal personnel who have contributed to Codemasters outstanding run of success. However current market conditions dictate that we make these cuts. By doing this now we ensure that Codemasters is well positioned to continue publishing some of the best games in the world thus giving the company an enormous opportunity as the market moves into its expansion phase."

Hopefully this internal streamlining will ensure the future success of Codemasters who have brought us so many quality titles like Dizzy and Colin McRae rally. Rumours have already begun surfacing regarding a possible Microsoft buyout of Codemasters. These rumours are currently unsubstantiated but could prove interesting if they turn out to be true.
