SPOnG's Game of E3

Posted by Staff
SPOnG was simply blown away by what we saw of Bioshock at E3. For many of our staffers out at the show this year, this exquisite looking first person action RPG was the most talked about game of the show.

We caught up with the guys from Irrational Games at the show, and we’ll bring you that interview over the next few weeks. Hopefully, we'll also get Irrational’s Ken Levine on the blower to find out a little more about the overall reaction to the game at the show.

We suspect they may well have been slightly overwhelmed, or perhaps they were just very good at appearing to be modest about having created such a thing of twisted beauty.

If you haven’t heard much about Bioshock here is what you need to know; It’s developed by the aforementioned Irrational Games, the hive minds behind Freedom Force and System Shock 2. The ‘spiritual successor’ to System Shock 2, it's being developed by most of the same team and is a first-person action role playing game set in a mysterious abandoned, underwater genetic laboratory. In addition to the shit scary, crumbling, beautifully lit Art Deco setting, the game combines sci-fi themes, RPG elements and a deep storyline with first-person action. Yadda yadda yadda.

Even as we write this, we realise that there don't appear to be any words that can do this game justice. It really has to be seen to be believed. The last time we were this blown away by a title we really didn’t expect to do it for us was with Bethesda’s Oblivion. Bioshock, mark our words, will be as important and as impressive in its own way as that groundbreaking title.

The genetic mutants that roam Bioshock's underground lair are all seeking a genetically-enhanced material known as ADAM, which they get from killing people and extracting it from their bloody corpses. Nice. As well as being slightly perturbed by how frighteningly dark the game was, while the Irrational guys were giving us the demo at E3 we found ourselves not really thinking about or comparing it to other games. Instead we were thnking of classic 50s gothic horror movies and the HP Lovecraft stories that, as a kids, we used to enjoy reading by torchlight under the duvet. These and other influences on the game are clear. But even though it ticks all the boxes, it is in no way a derivative 'sci-fi horror FPS'. Irrational has seemingly managed to create something which is going to stand alone as being truly new and original.

We’ll bring you more info on the game next week, along with the latest update from guys at Irrational Games. In the meantime, feast your eyes on these new screens furnished by the good people at 2K Games.
