Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis – Online Play

Ping Pong game set to rock Live.

SPOnG has just taken delivery of our final review code of Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis, and one of the first things we plan to do is get online with the guys at Rockstar London and most probably have them tan our hides with their ninja Table Tennis skills.

We will of course use the excuse that they have been playing it solid for the last six months or so, whilst we have so far totalled around five or six hours of play, for our preview, which you can read here.

The fact remains that Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis is one of our most anticipated Xbox Live enabled games so far this year.

The developers over at Rockstar San Diego have outlined the online element of the game in a recent chat with IGN. Lead Programmer Wil Paredes and network programmer John Gierach explained to them the nuances of online ping pong.

Wil explains that their top concern, “...was giving players the same sense of speed and responsiveness as the offline game. We wanted to recreate the experience of your buddy sitting next to you on the couch.”

He goes onto explain the modes in the online game: “You can play online in two-player exhibition, and four or eight-player round-robin timed tournament modes. The tournaments are handled a little differently from most games in that all the matches in a round of the tournament are played simultaneously, so that everyone gets to keep playing instead of sitting around watching a match. If you want to take a break from playing, we also have a spectator mode for both exhibition and tournament matches.”

So, as Jon goes onto explain, the spectator mode means that you can watch out for the top players on the leaderboards, and check out their matches to see what their tricks are.

Wil goes onto mention that doubles is not included in the online game, as they have focused all their efforts on making the 'mano a mano' experience the best one possible.

There are a number of achievements to strive for, including ones for winning streaks and shut-outs, ranked matches and standard ones, plus one that's awarded if you ever become the best player on all of Xbox Live. SPOnG now has an aim in life.

We’ll be trying out Table Tennis online over the next week or two, so watch this space for our full review. In the meantime, check out the official Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis website here.
