Whilst the classic Sonic games (as in anything before the Saturn launched) are often heralded as being some of the best platformers ever made, since the inception of 3D as the new almost universally-standard format for all games, Sega has had a great deal of trouble getting the old blue boy back up to snuff.
As those of you who tortured yourselves playing the Sonic adventure games know, in spite of all of the horrible hunting and shooting and (for the love of God!) fishing, when you got to be Sonic you knew that someone at Sonic team still knew what the heck they where doing.
We here at SPOnG made sure to play all the way through both of the previous iterations (Sonic Heroes was just to much for most to stand) just to get those few minutes of joy dashing around like blue lighting. Skipping around on flying debris in a giant tornado, being chased by an enormous killer whale as it destroys the very ground you stand on and many more. Well, at this past weeks E3 we got a chance to give a quick run through some of Sega’s latest entry into the waning series - which looks set to sadly carry on the legacy of it's 3D predecessors.
While the bit we got to play as Sonic was, as expected, fantastically fun and superb (although a bit tight on the handling but we are sure that'll be ironed out by the time it's released) the part we didn’t get to play, sadly, involves vehicles and shooting and who know what other sorts of pain.
On the plus side the bit that we did play was, as mentioned, spot on. We were instantly running along, sliding rails, jumping off pumpers and homing in on groups of enemies with Sonic's patented mid air dash attack. Sadly our time with Sonic was rather brief but we are still holding out hope that the ‘no Sonic’ levels are painless enough to allow us to get through to all the juicy blue goodness.
