New Free Radical FPS – First Details

Timesplitters creators in E3 Haze.

One of SPOnG’s most anticipated titles that we caught an all-too brief glimpse of from the showfloor yesterday was Ubisoft’s Haze, the first next gen project from the lauded Timesplitters team at Free Radical.

The background story to this impressive-looking FPS is thus. It’s 25 years in the future and anti-terrorist organisations have been privatised. You play as a character called Jake Carpenter, a globe-trotting soldier in the ongoing war, working for a terror-smashing corporation called Mantel.

The conflict begins in a war-torn country in South America, where you have been sent to fight a vicious rebel faction, The Promise Hand. At first glance, all is well, but things quickly begin to look a little strange.

Haze looks eye-wateringly stunning, seems to have hyper-intelligent AI and hyper-realistic physics. Plus, most importantly of all, some frikkin’ massive guns.

It also has more of an organic feel to it than Timesplitters, with some scenes we saw set in lush jungle terrain (think Far Cry) and others set in awe-inspiring mountainous regions. This is shaping up to be a very special next gen experience. We should manage to get to talk to the Free Radical guys about the game to get some more info and background on what inspired this little gem.

Haze is down for release on PlayStation3, Xbox 360 and PC early in 2007.
