Summary
Released for Xbox in November 2003, the latest instalment in Tom Clancy's long running Rainbow Six series has now made its way over to the PlayStation 2. As is always the case, a serious bout of intense counter-terrorism action is on the cards, as you take command of an elite, multinational squad of special operatives and enter into an assortment of authentic and dangerous real-world scenarios.
As the story goes, it's the year 2007 and the world is on the brink of a terrifying global conflict. As the United States is caught in an embargo-induced oil crisis, terrorist attacks against American interests escalate. Venezuela, which still supplies the United States with oil, also becomes a target. As unrest grows in America, protests rock the streets of Caracas, and while the shadow of terror looms, madmen plot even greater acts of murder and destruction. This is where you come in - along with the super-cool Team Rainbow, some of the most sophisticated technology available, and a fair amount of stealth and shooting skill.
There are a total of 15 missions to work through in the PS2 version, taking you to such diverse locales as Montreal, Venezuela and Switzerland. Holding everything together is an immersive storyline with events that directly affect gameplay, as well as a wealth of Hollywood-style cinematics, directed by Marco Brambilla of Demolition Man fame. As you'd expect, a healthy arsenal of weaponry is available throughout - vital to the completion of each task - including a massive variety of sub machine guns, assault rifles, shotguns, and sniper rifles, as well as grenades, charges, mines, and tear gas.
As with the previously released Xbox version, Rainbow Six 3 on PS2 takes full advantage of the machine's online capabilities, allowing up to eight players to partake in the action online (or 2 offline, split-screen) in a host of different game modes, including the likes of survival, team survival and co-operative. Even better, if you've got round to acquiring a USB headset then you can also make full use of this to shout out voice commands to your team mates.
Ever since the series first debuted on PC, Rainbow Six has long been established as the more serious person's FPS. This latest addition to the series continues the tradition, yet also benefits from an assortment of welcome new features.
