Split Second or Split Second: Velocity as it's also been known is a racer from Disney Interactive and Black Rock Studio (the team behind Moto GP and Pure, so it's got a good pedigree).

The game is set in an unreal 'reality' TV series, giving the gamer the incentive not just to win for the sake of honour and skill, but also virtual TV fame and cash.

The key to winning here – aside from handling your supped-up, highly technologised racing car (well, vehicle) is the Powerplay meter. This gaming device is built up by pulling stunts, passing other competitors in close proximity, slipstreaming other cars, and drifting.

Comparisons to kart games or to the upcoming Blur from Bizarre Creations and Activision might not be misplaced. Once the Powerplay meter has been maxed (all three bars are filled) then the gamer gets the chance to really mess with the opposition by placing obstacles in their paths.

Bear in mind, however, that the AI opponents will be doing exactly the same thing. As will human foes in the multi-player modes of Split/Second.

Players can, however, go earlier on the Poweplay meter if desperate measures or tactics are called for, by unleashing slightly less deadly events prior to the full three-bar guage filling up.

Bearing in mind the TV 'reality' series premise of the game, however, it's not all about racing. The player has a career mode during the 24 episode series in which three races play out per episode. The series progression sees different vehicles and different challenges coming into play. So, expect the unexpected such as helicopter attacks.
