Summary
The SOCOM series, or "Special Operations Command" to give it its Sunday name, has proved to be hugely successful since its 2003 début - testament to this are the seven prior releases on PS2 and PSP totalling sales into the multi-millions. Now the series that heralded the arrival of Sony's PlayStation Online service returns - in high-definition - as SOCOM Confrontation.
Sticking to the series' basic formula of online "real world" combat, viewed from over the player character's shoulder, Confrontation no longer straddles with realms of single and multiplayer. Instead it jumps with both feet into the realm of multiplayer online combat, forgoing any hint of single player mode or missions-based objectives.
Befitting of a game that brings together people from all continents, Confrontation gives players the opportunity to battle it out in realistic war-torn locations from all corners of the world. Featuring five new North Africa-based maps, there's also a return for some of the favourite maps from previous SOCOM titles, each reworked in high-definition for their PS3 outing.
Focusing firmly on the job of delivering an exceptional multiplayer experience, each map - new or reworked - supports up to 32 players and offers seven different game modes, all wrapped up with support tournaments, clan ladders and leaderboards. Players can tailor their experience by customising their character's appearance, adjusting the facial features and uniform. Along with a fully featured "load out", where players choose the weapons they take into battle and accompanying "encumbrance" penalty, SOCOM Confrontation is a dream come true for fans of the series.
