Summary
Midway's foray into the survival horror scene comes courtesy of Surreal's gruesome action romp The Suffering. As the game's title suggests, it's no tea and biscuits on the lawn, with the usual 'fight for survival' being the main objective of the day, set across a variety of disturbing environments, with plenty of pulse-pounding combat and a very mature horror story tying everything together.
The game is set in a rather grim maximum security penitentiary, with you taking on the role of unfortunate protagonist Torque, an inmate accused of a brutal crime that he may or may not have committed. Trapped in this hideous environment and beset by the usual array of violent creatures, you must wield all manner of weapons in order to stay alive, whilst attempting to escape the nightmare that has been unleashed on the prison.
As you would expect, the game is overflowing with blood, guts and gore - dripping, pooling and splattering throughout the nine terrifying levels, set in both indoor and outdoor environments. Along the way you must face up to and dispose of a dozen different horrific monsters, each representing the means of execution that befell them, as well as interact with a cast of hardened criminals that can either stand in your way or offer assistance in your plight to escape.
Helping you out somewhat is an arsenal of over 10 different deadly weapons (what else?), ranging from a shiv to a flamethrower. In addition, your character is also endowed with the ability to channel his rage and use it to transform into a hideous beast himself, thus enabling you to battle hand-to-hand with your frightening foes.
Throughout The Suffering, the game changes depending on how you play. As a result, there are three different endings to witness, each one reflecting how you acted throughout the game - are you a cold-blooded killer, a man wrongfully accused, or something else entirely? There's only one way to find out...
