Summary

The 'thinking man's' first-person shooter returns following a notable absence and carrying the subtitle Covert Strike. A subtitle that anyone who has played the original Project IGI will understand is par for the course, as the game focuses very much on stealth, subterfuge and tactical planning.

Once again, players assume the role of British covert operative David Jones, a former SAS soldier now working for the secret U.S. military organisation codenamed 'IGI'. Set directly after the events of the original game, the story sees Jones undertake top-secret military operations, infiltrating airbases, harbours, and secret terrorist installations located deep within enemy territories. The premise, as usual - preventing international terrorism.

Like its predecessor, Covert Strike places a great emphasis on the single player campaign. Featuring enhanced AI, a diverse range of weapons and a newly implemented save system (basically a 'quick save' that allows you to upload your co-ordinates via satellite) the immersive storyline spans three continents, with each mission expanding the plot with well scripted and blissfully short cut-scenes. The missions throughout range from all-out base assaults to covert surveillance and infiltration; thefts and escapes in outdoor and indoor, urban and rural environments.

Thankfully there are plenty of weapons and high-tech gadgetry to get your hands on and use to your advantage. Over 30 guns and other accurately modelled real-world weapons feature, including knives, pistols, assault and sniper rifles, sub-machine guns, miniguns, rocket launchers and grenades. On top of that you've also got your digital binoculars, thermal imaging device and portable map computer - all of which come in handy in the quest to keep a low profile whilst eliminating the baddies.

IGI 2 is one of many tactical FPS games available for the PC but it should not be overlooked - the game is extremely well crafted, involving and quite challenging. It also sports a full range of multiplayer features, so longevity is assured.
