Summary

Isn’t the World Cup brilliant? We all love the World Cup. Anything that’s responsible for my local boozer opening at six in the morning gets my vote. And aren’t England brilliant? Well, Okay, maybe not then, but we all love them anyway, especially David Beckham who, incidentally, is now the star of his very own video game.

David Beckham Soccer is an extremely comprehensive football game, featuring hundreds of up-to-date teams and players, and a vast array of competitions and game modes. Classic England moments are in there for you to re-live, including the qualifying match against Greece and the formidable 5-1 thrashing of Germany. Thankfully, today’s (12-06-02) lame effort against Nigeria will not be included.

DBS offers a custom AI feature, which enables the player to manage each player’s AI individually within the team, giving control over movement and formation. Coupled with the game’s comprehensive Custom Editor, which allows for customisation of every aspect of the team and players, this presents quite a versatile play model.

Being oh-so famous for those thunderous free kicks, no virtual tribute to the star would be complete without extensive possibilities to re-live the moments. Enter the Advanced Set-plays system, which allows the player to choose from several existing set pieces whilst standing over a free kick or corner.

The motion-captured animation is fluid and the control system is intuitive, thus being accessible to beginners whilst offering precision control for advanced users. There are some Beckham exclusives thrown in as well, such as secret teams and a unique training mode, both personal additions of the banana-shooting boy wonder.

David Beckham Soccer is the game to have during these times of sporting patriotism. Let’s give a cheer for the lads. Altogether now…

Come on football, score a goal!!!
