Summary

The latest Resident Evil game to make an appearance on the Game Boy Color is an unique outing entitled Gaiden. With a storyline that won’t appear on any other format, Gaiden thrusts players once again into the frightening world of survival horror. Portable Zombie killing with a balanced blend of puzzle action in time for Christmas, better revise that letter to Santa.

In this adventure, the central character is Barry Burton, who fans might remember as one the S.T.A.R.S team from the original game. Barry’s mission is set onboard the infested Starlight pleasure cruiser. In this game you must help Barry find and destroy the B.O.W or Bio Organic Weapon. This devastating weapon can mutate cell DNA and create some truly horrific creatures. Good luck, you’ll need it.

The game is played from both a top-down, slightly isometric point of view for the exploration and adventure part of the game, but switches to a wide-screen first person view for the combat sequences. The combat requires quick reactions as well as tactical play, something Resident Evil players are already accustomed to.

In Resident Evil Gaiden there are over one hundred rooms set across four different decks. Encompassing ten different environments including a submarine. In a fashion similar to Metal Gear Solid, stealth tactics come into play in Gaiden. It’s important to avoid the line of sight of the wandering zombies. Otherwise they will beeline straight towards our hapless hero. They even gang up and attack from multiple directions at once, yikes.

Watch out for this original outing.
