Summary
If there is one game that will sell a million Game Boy Advances, it is Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2. The launch line-up of the Advance is impressive, but Tony Hawk 2 easily shines as the killer application. And yes, it is almost as good as the PlayStation and Dreamcast versions. It plays almost identically! The only difference is that the perspective is locked and that makes it a little harder to judge your landing angle. Apart from that small, understandable alteration, this is hand-held skating at its finest.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 features 13 professional skaters including legends like Steve Caballero and Rodney Mullen. Naturally, each skater has their own signature moves. Tony has the infamous 900 and Mullen has casperslides to 360 flips. These signature or special moves can only be performed when your trick gauge is flashing. Each character usually has three special moves to start with, but you can buy more as you earn cash in the levels. If you can put a few special moves into your combos your score will skyrocket.
Each level presents several goals that you must complete to earn cash and unlock new levels. These tasks range from scoring ‘x’ amount of points to finding items. Certain levels are competition-based and you have three timed runs to impress the judges.
All of the cool cheats and secret characters are still hidden deep with the code, waiting for you to unlock them. What better incentive is there to complete the game with all characters and 100 percent it all? Moon gravity and perfect balance are two gameplay enhancing cheats to make the game even better.
Overall, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 plays excellently. Once you adapt your style and get used to the screen you’ll soon be impressed with the fluidity and brilliance of this conversion. Top marks.
