There may well be a supplementary spread of Outrunning activities, but paying too much attention to these could be detrimental. If you’re after an enormous, mission-punctuated racing saga, Burnout 3 would seem to be the better option. It’s if you want a whole, delicious, honest-to-goodness arcade machine with extra trimmings in your living room that Outrun 2 becomes unsurpassable.
Map-reading not an issue in Outrun 2
There’s a surprisingly popular discourse that complains of today’s games being too long, demanding and time-consuming. Because Outrun 2 was conceived in the arcades, it brings those short-dosage, quick-fix qualities with it.
It was designed to be played through fairly quickly, and so, if you’re skilled enough, it can be completed fairly quickly. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing at all. It means you can ‘have a quick go on Outrun 2’, and it will be just that: you can smash through it between finishing your coffee and leaving your house in the morning. Then, when you get home, you can have another quick bash with a cup of tea. By devoting just ten or fifteen minutes to your Xbox, you can have a ‘whole go’ on Outrun 2 – it’s a convenient, tasty and nutritious video-gaming snack of goodness. the addictive quality and urge to replay is just as prevalent in this home conversion. It may surprise you quite how many times you want to play through that main, branching route racing mode, even in quick succession.
On top of all that, we haven’t even mentioned Outrun 2’s online multiplayer mode. Obviously, at this early stage it’s not something easily tested, but it’s there and we’d imagine that the Outrun champion spots will be hotly contested all across the globe. Although it allows for up to 8 players simultaneously, it could well be the quest to become immortalised on the time-based leaderboard that keeps people clocking on and boasting like the obsessive loons they will surely be.
